What Is Fresh Feeding?

Raw feeding is a diet that is based around the principles of evolutionary nutrition. Our dogs have been eating this way for hundreds of years. The aim of raw feeding is to match how your pet’s anatomy is designed to process nutrients.

There was a great article written in The Age recently that is worth a read.

Dogs and cats are biologically designed to consume meat, offal, bones, secreting organs and vegetables. When dogs and cats are fed a diet they aren’t biologically designed to eat, such as a highly processed kibble diet, it’s easy to see why our cats and dogs have so many health issues.

Although there is a lot of scepticism around raw feeding (especially from vets), the fact is that raw meat-based diets are highly digestible, significantly more than kibble or canned-based diets. It can be done DIY or there are a huge variety of brands on the market that supply ready-made raw meals. The key to feeding raw is to have everything on rotation and constantly adding new and different ingredients.

Bulk of the raw diets typically include;

  • Muscle meat adds good quality natural protein, fat, vitamins and minerals to your pet’s diet; bones, ground for calcium
  • Natural vitamins and minerals found in livers and kidneys for multivitamins, plus offal is packed with key nutrients, including amino acids, B-complex vitamins, vitamins D, E, and K2. It also provides trace minerals including chromium, copper, and zinc
  • Raw eggs, which contain vitamins and omega 3, are a source of amino acids and rich in fatty acids, iron, vitamin A, and other nutrients and minerals
  • Fruit and vegetables for vitamins and fibre

Then there are all the extras that need to be added to their meals in order for the diet to be complete and balanced over time. To make sure our pets get all the nutrients they need, we need to be adding a variety of different boosters/toppers on rotation.

  • Kefir
  • Bone Broth
  • Eggs
  • Egg shell powder
  • Supplements
  • Oily fish
  • Nuts
  • Seeds
  • Fermented vegetables
  • Coconut oil
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • Kelp powder
  • Hemp powder
  • Spirulina powders
  • Tripe
  • Just to name a few

Initially it can be overwhelming. I remember measuring every ingredient to an inch of its life. Once I became more confident and understood the fundamentals, the whole process started to become really fun and less stressful.

Just start slow, start somewhere.
